Orientation Workshops

Orientation upon entry

Orientation workshops support students in discovering their career inclinations and in the process of choosing their study or career path. Through practical activities, interactive sessions, and meetings with experts from the world of work, the workshops help participants explore various options, develop transferable skills, and become aware of their talents and interests. The workshops are divided by Department and their ultimate goal is to promote an informed and calm decision-making process by students. The workshops can be included in PCTO projects.

Department of Medicine and Surgery

The Human Anatomy laboratory is an environment dedicated to the in-depth study of Human Topographical and Systematic Anatomy with an interactive and innovative approach.
It features three-dimensional models for the study of bones, joints, and muscle insertions, and is also equipped with a digital anatomical table, the Anatomage Table 11.

Thanks to the Anatomage Table, students are encouraged to learn the various knowledge about body structures using a stratigraphic approach, being able to proceed from the most superficial to the deepest structures, just as in cadaveric dissections. This table also allows the study of real clinical cases through the loading of DICOM images and of microscopic anatomy with numerous histological sections related to different organs.

The main objective of the activities carried out in this laboratory is to provide a solid education that helps students connect theory with practice: what can be observed and recognized in an educational image compared to what they will observe and analyze in clinical practice such as radiographic images.
Experiential learning is essential for future healthcare professionals such as doctors, dentists, and healthcare professionals.

The microscopy laboratory is a dedicated environment for the observation and analysis of normal and pathological histological specimens. There are over 30 microscopes for bright-field viewing and 1 microscope equipped with a camera for image acquisition.

The main objective of the activities carried out in this laboratory is to provide a solid education that helps students connect theory with practice: what can be observed and recognized from an image in a book compared to what they will search for and analyze in clinical practice such as biopsy samples.
Experiential learning is essential for future healthcare providers such as physicians, dentists, and healthcare professionals.

Description: “The laboratory Start me up – LUM me up – Take me up provides students with the basic tools to work on start-up project ideas. Students will be prompted to work in a cooperative learning form on ideas for entrepreneurial innovation and structuring a business model within a contest. The students’ project ideas will be presented in pitch form and evaluated based on originality, presentation skills, and appeal to the business world by a Committee composed of LUM University professors, business representatives, and high school teachers. The laboratory is organized in collaboration with the Association “Young Entrepreneurs of Confindustria Bari-BAT”.

Department of Engineering

During the visit to the LUM engineering laboratory, various activities related to the degree courses in “Management Engineering” and “Computer Engineering for Digital Transition” will be proposed to students. In particular, interactive activities consisting of understanding and analyzing simple dynamic mathematical models (logistic equation, predator-prey models, etc.) and creating more or less complex objects using a 3D printer and a robotic arm will be proposed.

The activity involves the integration of sensors and actuators with microcontrollers for data collection and sharing to the cloud using IoT communication protocols (such as MQTT). Simple case studies will be described and implemented for real-time data processing directly on edge devices and embedded platforms, with application examples geared towards home automation, Industry 4.0, and smart city services. In addition, concepts and techniques of edge intelligence will be introduced, focusing on the implementation of artificial intelligence algorithms and exploring practical scenarios that combine machine learning and IoT.

The project management workshop aims to experiment with students on innovative project management methodologies used by project managers. Participants will be given a technology-oriented project idea, which will serve as the basis for a practical exercise. Students will be guided in using the PM Canvas, a structured tool for defining key project elements, including objectives, stakeholders, resources, and risks. They will then be introduced to creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) or Gantt Chart, essential tools for planning and monitoring project activities.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of Project Management methodologies;
  • Develop analytical and project planning skills;
  • Apply practical tools for managing and organizing activities;
  • The activity is structured interactively to promote learning through the direct application of concepts discussed, encouraging problem-solving skills and teamwork.
